2010

  • Developed appraisal of 50,000 tonne Pellet Plant business plan prior to investment; recommendations for risk reduction and return enhancement for investor and funding banks

  • Led multi-company Canada/Australia financing partnership mission to China, leading to $500 million in prospective partnerships.

  • Conceived and completed study on the concept of a Bio-trade Equity Fund to enable multi-billion Euro investments in biomass plants and supply chains worldwide to promote EU achieving renewable energy targets

  • Brought multi-company technology mission to Austria and Italy, to expose Canadian companies to ORC small power technology and other bioenergy technologies to develop bioenergy in Canada

  • Led mission to New England to tour community heat projects and learn effective business models for Canada

2009

  • Invited by Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade to meet bioenergy technology companies in Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain and Sweden and promote business partnerships with Canadian companies

  • Developed study with Flemish Institute for Technology and Trade Research (VITO) on 2nd Generation Biofuels

  • Developed study of "World Biofuel Maritime Shipping" with Vienna University of Technology and Norwegian University of Life Sciences

2008

  • Led 42-strong Canadian mission to Sweden to forge new trade and technology links

  • Developed the “Canada Report on Bioenergy 2008” for Environment Canada 

  • Working with Finnish Wood Energy Network to maximize bioenergy technology transfer to Canada

  • Canada- Sustainable Forest Biomass Supply Chains: Study to project long term costs of acquiring harvest waste resulting from new technologies and learning

  • Canada- Biomass Inventory: Assessment of availability of biomass for energy including bark, sawdust, shavings, harvest waste

  • Pre-feasibility Workbook for Bioenergy Projects in Eastern Ontario: (Jointly with Suthey-Holler Associates and Bio-Trends Inc.) Assessment of regional biomass availability and price, assessment of technology choices, and financial assessment of three example bioenergy projects

  • European Biomass Study: Assessment of European biomass markets including wood pellets, BioOil, biodiesel and raw biomass, encompassing policy drivers, the European Trading System

  • Biomass Supply Chains- Experiences and Lessons in Five Countries: (With T. Ranta, J. Heinimo, M. Perry, and O. Leistad)  Journal article awaiting publication

  • European Market Study for BioOil (Pyrolysis Oil): Estimation of biomass volume potential from Canada, Brazil and South Africa, comparison of costs of manufacturing BioOil and delivering to Rotterdam, and assessment of major markets for pyrolysis oil in Europe

  • Reducing Impediments to Pulp & Paper Mill Biomass Cogeneration (Jointly with BW McCloy and Associates)

  • Supply Chain Study: Assessment of the potential cost competitiveness of large volumes of Canadian wood pellets and BioOil for European market

  • Mill Residue Inventory Canada: Province by province assessment of the location and amount of surplus mill residue including hog fuel (Jointly with BW McCloy and Associates)

  • Afforestation Exploration Study: to explore profit potential for afforestation program in Northern Ontario

  • Assessment of the European Pellet Market: Demand by major company in several countries, including list of prospective purchasers, volumes and prices

  • Renewable Portfolio Standards in Canada and Harmonization Opportunities
